From national program to global collaboration

Exascale challenges are global. NumPEx works beyond national borders through two complementary initiatives it helped shape: InPEx, the international post-Exascale collaboration between Europe, Japan, the United States — and, since 2026, Latin America — and SPE, the European coordination action preparing the convergence of HPC, AI and quantum computing.

The International Post-Exascale Project (InPEx) is a pioneering initiative bringing together the brightest minds in the field of high-performance computing, from researchers and engineers to policy organizations and funding bodies. Its workshops and thematic workgroups aim to bridge the gaps between various national and international efforts like the French NumPEx project, the EuroHPC program, the ECP project in the US, and Japan’s FugakuNEXT project, to tackle emerging challenges in Exascale and post-Exascale systems.

These workshops will be hosted successively in Europe, the USA, and Japan, starting in 2023.

SPE — Strategy for Post-Exascale: a unified vision for Europe

Launched in June 2026, the Strategy for Post-Exascale (SPE) coordination action maps out Europe’s roadmap for post-Exascale computing, preparing the convergence of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and quantum computing for the 2026–2029 period. Initiated under the auspices of NumPEx and coordinated by Inria, SPE unites 23 leading European organizations — research institutes, national computing centres, universities, industry and European associations.

SPE builds the European pillar of the international post-Exascale effort: it supports and organizes European participation in InPEx activities, and delivers a continuously updated roadmap and policy papers to guide Europe’s investments in the post-Exascale era.
