NumPEx Newsletter n°2

Dear colleagues, 

We are excited to kick off 2025 with enthusiasm and determination, and it is with great pleasure that we present our first newsletter of the year. The landscape of High-Performance Computing (HPC) in Europe continues to evolve, and we are proud to play a central role in this transformation.

This month, NumPEx contributed to the French response to the AI Factory call funded by Euro HPC. The response to this call is expected in early March. The concept of an AI Factory is to bring together, around a EuroHPC supercomputer adapted/optimized for AI needs, a set of ecosystems and services (training, support, easier access to these computing resources, provision of data warehouses with data-related services, European and international collaborations...) all of which serve general AI needs, but also more specifically for each AI Factory, around certain AI application areas (called “business verticals”). 

On the global stage, our efforts continue to extend beyond Europe: the InPEx conference will take place in Japan this April, providing an exceptional platform for international collaboration and the exchange of expertise in HPC.

Looking ahead, our General Assembly on March 12-13 will focus on key topics such as the convergence of AI and HPC, software production within NumPEx, and the digital continuum. These discussions will be essential for shaping the next steps of our program.

We are also launching the first NumPEx call for projects to support advances in HPC, high-performance data analysis, and AI. With a budget of 4 million euros, this initiative will fund projects in three areas: AI methods and algorithms for HPC, programming models for accelerated architectures, and workflows for scientific data analysis, including the SKA project. Applications are open until April 1, 2025.

Exa-MA: packaging HPC Software Webinar Recap

On December 3, 2025, Emmanuel Agullo led a webinar on modern packaging strategies using Spack and Guix-HPC. Javier Cladellas also provided a preview of feelpp.benchmarking, a new tool for benchmarking HPC software on EuroHPC systems. For more details, see the bench.feelpp.org website generated using the tool for the toolboxes of Feel++.

Exa-SofT: sponsor of the ComPAS conference

Exa-SofT is proud to sponsor the ComPAS Conference in Bordeaux, which will take place from June 24 to June 27, 2025. ComPAS is a key event for the french-speaking community to exchange on parallelism, architecture, and systems in computing and aims to connect experienced scientists, young talents and industry professionals, encouraging new collaborations and research opportunities.

Exa-DoST: website update

The Exa-DoST page has been updated with more content, including detailed information about the teams and entities involved. Discover the latest updates and explore how these teams are shaping the future of high-performance computing and simulations.

Exa-AtoW: at the ECLAT hackathon

From February 3rd to 5th, 2025, Exa-AtoW participated in the  ECLAT hackathon at the Paris Observatory. The goal? Scaling up to efficiently manage the ever-growing volumes of astronomical data streams generated by  radio telescopes. This pluridisciplinary  project requires MPI integration, I/O optimization, and application algorithms, in preparation for future initiatives like LOFAR 2.0 and SKA.

Exa-DI: the co-design and co-development in NumPEx is moving forward

Following the series of Exa-DI Workshops, three co-design and co-development working groups (GT) bringing together the Exa-DI Computational and Data Team (CDT), the members of the contributing research and software development teams of the different NumPEx projects and the application demonstrators teams, were set up: Efficient discretization@Exascale, Unstructured mesh@Exascale and Block-structured AMR @Exascale. Thanks to these GTs, the first shared and well-specified proxy-apps are being designed and developed. In parallel, solutions for the packaging and deployment of these proxy-apps are in progress. In this context, a proxy-apps platform and a hub for training have been set-up.
